RIYADH: Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah on Monday wished success to Muhammad Mursi following his victory in Egypt’s presidential election.
“We appreciate this choice…and hope God will grant you success and guide you in your path in the service of Islam and the service of Egypt and its people,” the king said in a statement released by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
Five other Gulf states — the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman and Qatar also welcomed Mursi’s victory, along with other world leaders.
Mursi is Egypt’s first president since the uprising that toppled former strongman Hosni Mubarak last year.
The Muslim Brotherhood’s Mursi won 51.73 percent of the vote, defeating Ahmed Shafiq, who was Mubarak’s last prime minister. (*)
