Palestinians: Meeting delayed with Israeli Deputy Prime Minister

(AHRAM ONLINE)   —-  A senior Palestinian official says a planned meeting next week between the Palestinian president and the Israeli vice prime minister has been postponed indefinitely.

The official, who spoke anonymously on Saturday because of the sensitivity of the issue, did not give a reason for the delay.

But President Mahmoud Abbas has been under intense pressure from other Palestinians not to meet with Israel’s Shaul Mofaz on Sunday. Mofaz heads the centrist Kadima Party and has been urging Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to make another push for a peace deal.

Prior to joining politics, he was the Israeli military chief who led a bruising offensive in the West Bank.

Expectations were already low that the rare high-level talks would help restart long-stalled peace negotiations.   (*)
